Springs Openers Doors

Garage Doors in LondonOne visit,
a stocked van.

The common springs, cables, rollers, hinges, photo-eyes and opener parts ride along on every trip to London. That means most repairs are finished the day the technician arrives, and when a door needs something unusual, he measures it properly so the right part comes on the second visit.

The garage door services we bring to London fall into four groups: repair and maintenance for doors that are sticking or noisy; springs and lifting hardware; openers, remotes and access; and new door installation or upgrade for homes and businesses that are ready for a change.

Winter is when garage doors in London fail most, so we prepare for it. Cold-rated lubricants, bottom seals that stay soft in the frost, spring tension checked before the freeze and opener force adjusted for a stiffer door. A door serviced in the autumn is a door that opens in January.

How a visit goes

Extension springs, the long springs that run beside the horizontal tracks, are common on older doors. We replace them in pairs, matched to the door weight, and always with safety cables threaded through them so a break stays contained.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 52 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Original openers in older neighbourhoods often predate photo-eye sensors and rolling-code remotes. Bringing one up to date means a quieter motor, sensors that stop the door for a child or pet, and remotes that cannot be copied from the driveway, all installed in a single visit.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census). In mixed neighbourhoods, noise matters differently from one address to the next. A detached house with a bedroom above the garage and a townhouse with a neighbour through the wall both benefit from a belt-drive opener and nylon rollers, and we explain the difference either way.

Homeowners ask

What happens to the opener during the work?

It is disconnected at the release cord and unplugged before any hardware comes off, so the motor cannot pull on a door that is missing a section. After the new section is in and the door has been balanced by hand, the opener is reconnected and tested: its reversal against a board on the floor and its photo-eyes are checked every time, and the open and close limits or the force setting are reset only if that check shows they need it.

What happens during the visit?

The technician maps the gap with the door closed, checks the door is level and the bottom section straight, and identifies the retainer and profile. The opener is disconnected and the door clamped at working height. The old seal comes out, the channels are cleaned, a new seal is cut and fed in, and any retainer work is done. The door is then closed under power, the opener reset, and the reversing and photo-eye tests run.

My door was replaced last year. Does the perimeter seal need doing too?

Often, yes. A new door is sometimes fitted against the original wood stop and its old fin, and the new door may sit slightly differently in the opening, so the old seal no longer meets it. If daylight shows at the edges or the fin is hard and cracked, a new seal set against the new door completes the installation and matches the fresh look of the door.

What if the car hit the door as well as the track?

Then the assessment covers both. A bumper that creases the track usually dents or bows the bottom section, and can bend the bottom bracket, the roller stem and a hinge. The technician follows the impact through those parts, straightens or replaces the track, and explains separately what the section and its hardware need, whether that is a strut, a bracket, or a replacement panel. The door is only put back to work once the whole path is sound.
