Repair & Maintenance
Will you tell me if the door should not be used?
Yes, plainly and at the door. A slack or frayed cable, a gap in a spring coil, a door hanging crooked, a bracket pulling out of the framing or an opener that fails the reversal test are the kinds of findings that put an item in the stop-use group. When that happens you see the reason yourself, the door is left resting in a safe spot with the opener unhooked, and the fix is written up and quoted so it can be booked. What is the difference between a tune-up and a safety inspection?
An inspection looks and reports; a tune-up looks, reports and then does the maintenance. Both begin with an observed cycle and a check of hardware, balance, sensors and reversal. A tune-up goes on to tighten fasteners, lubricate the moving points, adjust the opener and align the photo-eyes, and it may swap a worn roller or a bottom seal on the spot. If you want the door serviced rather than assessed, the tune-up is the one to book. Garage Door Tune-Up
My car is trapped inside. Can I lift the door by hand to get it out?
Lifting a crooked door is where most injuries around this problem happen, because the springs and cables are loaded unevenly and the door can shift suddenly. Tell the technician on the phone that a vehicle is inside; getting it out is part of the plan, and the door will be supported and levelled before it is raised. A short wait is far cheaper than a bent section or a hand caught between panels. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
What happens to the opener during the work?
It is disconnected at the release cord and unplugged before any hardware comes off, so the motor cannot pull on a door that is missing a section. After the new section is in and the door has been balanced by hand, the opener is reconnected and tested: its reversal against a board on the floor and its photo-eyes are checked every time, and the open and close limits or the force setting are reset only if that check shows they need it. Are the bottom rollers different from the rest?
The wheels themselves are usually the same, but their home is not. The bottom rollers sit in the bottom brackets, which also anchor the lifting cables and therefore carry the counterbalance load whenever the door is closed. That is why manufacturers put warning labels there and why this position is handled by a trained technician who either exchanges the roller without disturbing the bracket or relieves the spring tension first. It is also the position most exposed to salt and slush, so it is inspected with extra care. Garage Door Roller Replacement
What information helps when I book the visit?
Whether the door is closed, open or stuck; where the noise or the gap appears and roughly how high; whether you can see a cracked, bent or loose hinge and whether it is at the edge or the middle; whether the door is a single or a double, steel or wood, and how many panels it has; and whether anything hit the door lately. A photo of the hinge and its stamped number is useful. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
What if the car hit the door as well as the track?
Then the assessment covers both. A bumper that creases the track usually dents or bows the bottom section, and can bend the bottom bracket, the roller stem and a hinge. The technician follows the impact through those parts, straightens or replaces the track, and explains separately what the section and its hardware need, whether that is a strut, a bracket, or a replacement panel. The door is only put back to work once the whole path is sound. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
What is the cable drum, and when does it need replacing too?
The drum is the grooved wheel on each end of the torsion shaft that the cable winds onto as the door opens. Its grooves guide the cable in a single layer and its shape sets how the door is balanced through its travel. A drum is replaced when the grooves are worn or cracked, the cable slot is damaged, or it has spun on the shaft and scored it. Drums are changed in pairs. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Openers & Access
What do the blinking lights on the opener mean?
They are a diagnostic code. On openers made in roughly the past fifteen years, the head unit flashes its lights, or a pair of up and down arrows, in a counted pattern such as one flash then five. Each pattern corresponds to a fault family on the maker's chart for that model: sensor circuit obstructed or open, motor commanded but not moving, more force than allowed. The technician reads the pattern, then confirms it by hand, since one fault can imitate another. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
How and how often is the rail lubricated?
On the interval the opener's own manual calls for, often every two to three years. With the power off, the old grease is wiped from the rail along the path the trolley travels, and a thin layer of white lithium grease is applied in its place. The door is then run a few times so the trolley spreads it. The door's own tracks, where the rollers run, are never greased; they stay clean and dry, and the rollers, hinges and bearings take a garage door lubricant once a year instead. How often should belt tension be checked?
A look every few months is enough: with the door closed and again with it open, the belt should run level with no sag below the rail. A yearly service that checks tension against the spring length, looks at the sprocket and pulley and runs the balance and reversal tests keeps a belt drive quiet for its whole life. Check again after the first hard cold of the winter. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Will the new opener cope with an unheated garage in winter?
Yes, when it is chosen for it. Manufacturers publish an operating temperature range for each model, and the technician matches that to a detached or unheated garage. The force setting is tuned so the door moves in the cold without the operator being oversensitive, the hardware gets a cold-rated lubricant, and a backup battery is kept charged by the unit. Clearing ice from the threshold remains the one winter chore. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
How should I clean the new exterior?
Follow the care information for the selected finish. In general, use a soft cloth or sponge with a suitable mild solution, rinse away residue and clear grime from the lower edge and seals. Road salt deserves regular attention during winter. Avoid abrasive methods unless the product guidance specifically says the surface accepts them. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
Does an uneven garage floor affect the result?
Yes, because the bottom seal meets the slab across the entire width. Measurements show whether the floor slopes consistently, has isolated high spots or has settled at one corner. A flexible astragal can accommodate modest variation, while larger differences may need a separate floor or threshold solution. Door limits should be set to close evenly rather than compress one side excessively. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Can two single doors be replaced with one wide door?
Yes, as a coordinated renovation. The centre support, new header or beam, side jambs, electrical routing, and finished opening are building-work considerations, while the sectional door needs suitable clearances, pressure criteria, reinforcement, tracks, and attachments. Structural design and door selection should be aligned before materials are ordered so each trade works to the same dimensions. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
May the new door use my existing tracks?
Only when the new door instructions and field assessment establish compatibility. Track spacing and curves relate to section thickness, roller position, door weight, headroom and opener layout. A track that suited the former door may place the new sections incorrectly. Treating tracks and sections as one designed system provides a clearer basis for alignment, balance and future parts identification. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
