backing out?

A creased bottom panel is a common sight in White Hills, and it rarely means a whole new door. We check the struts, hinges and track alignment, replace the damaged section when a match is available, and reinforce the panel so the door lifts straight and looks whole again from the street. The same crew covers Hyde Park.

Send us a note about your door in White Hills.

Customers in White Hills sometimes worry they will be sold a new door when a repair would do. Our practice is the opposite. Repairs are the first choice whenever the panels and frame are sound; replacement is recommended only when the door has genuinely reached its end, and we show you why.

How a visit goes

Extension springs, the long springs that run beside the horizontal tracks, are common on older doors. We replace them in pairs, matched to the door weight, and always with safety cables threaded through them so a break stays contained.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 52 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Wiring in an older garage may be a single outlet on the ceiling shared with the light, so a new opener is chosen with that in mind, and a battery backup covers the door during a power cut. The technician looks at the outlet before recommending a unit.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).Mixed housing brings mixed garage use: workshops and storage in the detached homes, everyday parking and a tight squeeze in the attached ones. Sealed rollers and protected sensors suit the busy workshop door; a quiet opener and a well-balanced door suit the townhouse.

Homeowners ask

My car is trapped inside. Can I lift the door by hand to get it out?

Lifting a crooked door is where most injuries around this problem happen, because the springs and cables are loaded unevenly and the door can shift suddenly. Tell the technician on the phone that a vehicle is inside; getting it out is part of the plan, and the door will be supported and levelled before it is raised. A short wait is far cheaper than a bent section or a hand caught between panels.

My door was replaced last year. Does the perimeter seal need doing too?

Often, yes. A new door is sometimes fitted against the original wood stop and its old fin, and the new door may sit slightly differently in the opening, so the old seal no longer meets it. If daylight shows at the edges or the fin is hard and cracked, a new seal set against the new door completes the installation and matches the fresh look of the door.

Are the bottom rollers different from the rest?

The wheels themselves are usually the same, but their home is not. The bottom rollers sit in the bottom brackets, which also anchor the lifting cables and therefore carry the counterbalance load whenever the door is closed. That is why manufacturers put warning labels there and why this position is handled by a trained technician who either exchanges the roller without disturbing the bracket or relieves the spring tension first. It is also the position most exposed to salt and slush, so it is inspected with extra care.

How and how often is the rail lubricated?

On the interval the opener's own manual calls for, often every two to three years. With the power off, the old grease is wiped from the rail along the path the trolley travels, and a thin layer of white lithium grease is applied in its place. The door is then run a few times so the trolley spreads it. The door's own tracks, where the rollers run, are never greased; they stay clean and dry, and the rollers, hinges and bearings take a garage door lubricant once a year instead.
